Asaba – Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the Delta North Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.
Okowa convincingly defeated the incumbent Senator Ned Nwoko and another aspirant, Maryam Ali, during the APC primary election held across the nine local government areas of the district on Monday.
Announcing the results, the Returning Officer, Mr Tonukari, said Okowa dominated the contest right from the start and recorded commanding leads in virtually all the local government areas.
According to the results released, Okowa polled 9,436 votes in Ndokwa East LGA against Nwoko’s 79 votes and Ali’s 15 votes.
In Ika South LGA, the former governor recorded 9,763 votes, while Nwoko managed only 19 votes, with Ali scoring zero.
Okowa also posted a massive 13,110 votes in Oshimili North, compared to Nwoko’s 287 votes, while Ali again recorded no vote.
In Ukwuani LGA, Okowa scored 12,167 votes, Nwoko got 105 votes, and Ali had none.
In a major upset, Okowa defeated the incumbent Senator in his own local government area, polling 5,480 votes against Nwoko’s 1,343 votes.
The former governor maintained his dominance in other areas, scoring 10,353 votes in Aniocha South and 11,616 votes in Oshimili South. Nwoko recorded 168 and 74 votes respectively in those councils, while Ali made little impact.
In Ika North East LGA, Okowa posted a remarkable 26,185 votes against Nwoko’s 24 votes, with Ali scoring zero. He also won Ndokwa West with 15,199 votes to Nwoko’s 513 votes, while Ali again failed to record any vote.
Declaration
After the collation of results, the APC National Working Committee leader in Delta State, Chief Eugene Odo, formally declared Senator Ifeanyi Okowa as the winner of the primary election.
Odo described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and credible, noting that party members conducted themselves in an orderly manner.
“Senator Ifeanyi Okowa is hereby declared the winner, having scored the highest number of lawful votes cast in this peaceful and credible primary election,” he announced.
Party members who spoke to newsmen commended the smooth conduct of the primaries, describing it as largely violence-free and well-coordinated by party officials and security agencies across the district.
The victory positions Okowa as the APC candidate for the Delta North Senatorial seat in the forthcoming 2027 National Assembly elections.
